Social Media for Birth Centers – 1 week to California!

Next Friday I’m teaching social media content strategy in California – the event is the 4th Annual AABC Birth Institute for midwives, physicians, nurses, doulas, chiropractors, childbirth educators, birth center and hospital administrators, and advocates for change.

It’s a privilege to attend the conference next week, especially in light of the changes taking place right here in Minnesota. Earlier this year, Minnesota joined 30 other states that allow for free-standing birth centers ["Birthing a new option, Star Tribune, May 24, 2010"] like the new Morning Star Women’s Health and Birth Center in St. Louis Park.

It’ll be interesting to see how a group that advocates for change responds to and engages with the unlimited possibilities of social media — especially for those who take the lessons back to Minnesota, where winds of change have just picked up.

Look out, Rribbitz is heading to California! We’re going to have some fun!

Lessons in new biz:
 be a bargain, screw yourself.

aka: How to sell yourself short and screw all hope of proving your real value.

As promised, I said I’d share some of the lessons I learned in launching Rribbitz. For this first installment, let’s look at one of the “brilliant” ideas I had when it came to getting new business. Go ahead, judge me. That’s what I’m here for. But even more… post your own questions, comments, and lessons — we’ll all be better for it in the long run.

Brilliant idea:

Offering my services at fire-sale prices for an introductory period. The goal? To convince a reluctant client of my amazing value and eventually sign them on at the full rate.

[BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO]

The reality of my brilliant idea:

Nice try, self. I ended up giving my services away when I could have been chasing down paying work. And the worst part? I soon realized that paying clients came first when it came to allocating my talents and energy for the day — and that reduced-rate client I was trying so hard to impress? Really wasn’t getting the best of my talent or attention in the long run. So ultimately, I shot myself in the foot. Twice.

Lessons from the brilliant idea
:
If you sell yourself short, you’ll pay for it one way or another. By losing money, delivering a lesser product or service, and by showing the client that you’re happy to be a bargain. Let’s hear that [BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO] again.

Go for what you’re worth – and when you find a client who enthusiastically agrees with you, the motivation to keep that client happy and do your best work will feed your soul, your business, and the end result.

Without making you feel like you sacrificed something to get there.

NEXT LESSON:
When a client wants to break up with you….
what it really means. And how to use the experience as another springboard.

Spotlight on: Leap Year clients, part 1

Andi Dickson, President, SixSpeed Marketing

How we met: In 2006, Andi was the Red Bull Field Marketing Manager for all Red Bull events in Minnesota. We met when he hired my agency for project management on Art of the Can, and I ran contestant relations for the event.

What we’re doing now: Andi and Tom Cusciotta started SixSpeed Marketing last summer. Andi brings me on for creative projects, social media and strategy writing. Even when I’m not working for him, he lets me camp out at his company, pilfer Red Bull, and harass him. All in love, of course. Got a huge event that can’t stand for mediocre marketing? Talk to SixSpeed.

On my leap-year survey, Andi said: “Kim makes it easy, no lengthy briefs needed. She understands today’s world of advertising, she is fast, tactical and gets its right.”

Steven Olinger, President, Nerica

How we met: I met Steven last summer at a speed networking event. And then he attended my session at UnSummit3, and right after that session he said, “I want to hire you to write my web site.” :)

What Rribbitz did for him: Edited the copy on his new website before it launched last November. If you’re looking for a business consultant to help you solve some marketing and sales growth issues – talk to Steven. He’s passionate, smart and knows how to “connect the dots!”

On my leap-year survey, Steven said: “Your success in business can be measured by your willingness to make changes. Rribbitz helps make change come easily.”

Adria Richards, Organic Technology Consultant

How we met: Ignite Minneapolis 2009. Adria’s presentation: Shiny Phone Gadgets. Mine: Write a novel in 30 days.

What Rribbitz did for her: Edited web copy, press kit and speaker bios for 2009 and 2010 events like WordCamp and SXSW. If you need a brilliant, enthusiastic person to help you incorporate new technologies into your business or website – she’s the one. And you can contact her more than one way.

On my leap-year survey, Adria said: “Kim is the type of upbeat, creative and fun consultant you want working on your project. She learns what your company is about, explores ideas with you and then delivers! It’s like picking up delicious ice cream from the neighborhood shop vs going to the grocery store for a generic tub. I highly recommend Kim for writing creative copy, press releases, promotional material and exploring social media messaging!”

David and Jennifer Lanham, Your Trusted Assistant

How we met: networking, of course!

What Rribbitz is doing for them: We’re just getting started together. As virtual assistants to clients across the country, David and Jennifer love what they do and they know what they want their company to be. They charge enthusiastically into opportunity. Check out their site in a few months, and you’ll see what I mean. Oh, and if you’re buried in paperwork and client communications that you can never catch up on? Call them now. I mean it.

On my survey, David said: “Kim has been awesome – we hired her to develop a new brand and marketing direction, and she immediately picked up the fundamentals of our business and applied her unique insights towards our new campaign. It only took about 2 minutes for us to realize that she really “gets it”.  She came up with these amazing ideas that we would never have thought of on our own.  I wouldn’t hesitate to refer my best client, or even my best friend to Kim!”

It’s Leap Year!

Last year, May 22 was my last day in the agency world. My last day of salary employment, a steady paycheck, and all the cozy goodness that comes along with paid benefits. I knew damn well what I was getting into — and my husband did, too. Because I’m the breadwinner for my family, and failure was simply not an option.

Launching Rribbitz – my own creative consulting company – has been more fun – and more work – than I ever imagined.

So I’m celebrating leap year this week — and I’m going to do it by celebrating all the cool people and clients who made it possible. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I hate the blah blah blah – so believe me, I’ll just get to the point.

Stay tuned for some words of thanks and recognition – coming up, right after I attend my daughter’s preschool concert. Because I can! :)

oh and by the way….
Were you a client, colleague, or cheerleader for Rribbitz this year? I’d be honored if you took my quick (and fun) survey!

Ignite Minneapolis… almost here!

Step 1: Admitted that I was powerless and my life had become unmanageable… :)

Submitted my presentation last night for this Thursday’s Ignite Minneapolis. Looking over it, I’m rather amused to see that my tips for living freelance amount to twelve steps.

Twelve steps – heh. Twelve steps to leaving that salary job and living freelance.

Twelve steps to sanity!

If you’re joining us at the Bedlam Theater in Minneapolis — as part of Global Ignite Week — I look forward to seeing you! And if you can’t be there, you can always catch the videos on the Ignite Minneapolis YouTube channel.

Here’s to living life and loving work!

UnSummit3 – this saturday!

Im going! Are you?!

I'm going! Are you?!

Hey, did you know… Rribbitz is proud to be a sponsor of the UnSummit in Minneapolis this weekend!

If you’re signed up, I’ll see you there (and if you’re not signed up, well… it’s sold out). After a day chock-full of brilliant ideas, sparkling conversation and inspirational networking, what will we leave with?

Join me at one of the last sessions of the day where I’ll facilitate a conversation about taking a leap and DOING SOMETHING with all of that new-found wisdom and insight. I’ll tell you about my own insanity (leaving a full time job to go solo), and I want to hear more about yours. For example:

Is there really a difference between faking it … and making it?

What’s stopping you from taking a leap?

How can everyone in the room gang up on you in a way that makes you JUMP!?

You get the idea – we’re winging it, people! This is the UnSummit!

“Full participation, full dissemination and free admision.”

I’m not a professional, but I play one in my mind — and by the end of this particular session, I hope you’ll feel the same way about yourself. :)

See ya there-
